Fountain Pen 101

Fountain Pen 101 is an introductory-level class covering the basics of fountain pens and their uses. We will explore reasons to use fountain pens, fountain pen anatomy, filling mechanisms, how to clean, ink options, pen storage, papers, and common fountain pen mistakes. Attendees will receive a fountain pen and samples of various fountain pen-friendly papers.

Fee: $15 for materials.

Fountain Pen 201

So you know you like fountain pens? But what’s next? In this class we will explore how to pick out that next pen; from materials to nibs to filling systems we will cover what to think about going forward.

Creative Journaling

Join Mrs GCrafties for this fun class and explore your creative side. Learn some journaling basics you can do to journal your journey. In this class, you’ll be provided with a notebook, stickers, and ephemera to start journaling about your trip to the Orlando Pen Show.

This class is great for the novice or experienced Pen user that is new to vintage.

The ‘How’ and ‘Why’ of how we see colors. Have you ever found yourself arguing with someone about what color you’re both looking at? Ever wonder if what is on the page differs from what is in our minds? What exactly is a color and what are the hidden nuances of colors that make our world so interesting to look at? Join Bert Anderson, a professional ink maker, for a fun and informative exploration of color theory.

American Cursive Handwriting

Please join our 1-hour introduction class to American Cursive Handwriting. Where fun happens while you learn correct letter forms and some pizzazz strokes to WOW your handwriting style.

Supplies needed:

  • No 2 Pencils, sharpener OR mechanical pencil with .05 lead
    • OR .05 tip pen (My favorite) 0.5 needle tip Energel liquid gel ink pen
    • OR any favorite fountain pen with the same nib size
  • Tracing paper or marker paper (lined guild sheet will be provided)
  • 2-4 paperclips to hold your papers together

Fee: A $10 Cash fee will help cover the cost of printed exemplars. Surplus donations will also help cover some costs for the Scribes of Central Florida table rental for the Orlando Pen Show. Please stop by the table and receive your personalized book marker!

Roxanne Smith was introduced to Calligraphy in 2018 through the Scribes of Central Florida: a 501©3 local and active Guild. She served as President for 3 terms and is currently on the board as Past President. It has been her passion to learn as much as possible about lettering and handwriting styles.

She has been fortunate to travel for National and International conferences, and then under the explosive opportunity of ZOOM, studied from many renowned Calligraphy professionals. This passion has led her to teach handwriting.

“I have a strong desire to teach Cursive Handwriting to our youth and adults. An important skill set that has been put aside for the computer keyboard.”

Roxanne is a current member of International Association of Master Penmen and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPTH). She has completed the (ACICP) American Cursive Instructors Certification Program and studied under Master Penmen, Michael Sull, Vivian Mungall, Pat Blair, and Harvest Crittendon.

Collage Journaling and Tunnel Pages

This workshop is open to beginners and experienced collagers/journalers both. It is for those who want to learn about Collage journaling and tunnel pages.

You will learn the following and much more:

  • how to choose a theme, concept or color scheme
  • how to layout a single-page, double-page or tunnel-page spread
  • layering of ephemera, scraps, stickers

Attendees are encouraged to bring any ephemera, stamps, stickers, fountain pens, inks, postcards, stationary, vintage papers, etc., they may want to work with. This is not a requirement but will make the experience more personal for each attendee.

The following basic supplies will be provided:

  • small softcover journal
  • mini scissors
  • glue tape
  • ruler
  • washi tapes
  • an assortment of ephemera, paper scraps, and stickers of varying themes.

Fee: $85 for 2 hours of instruction and time for making your own spreads.

70th Anniversary of the Parker Jotter, A Deep Dive

Geoffrey Parker the Great Grandson of George S Parker will be talking about the history of the Parker Jotter pen from his family’s history. Everyone has had or used a Jotter at some point. Come and hear all about this iconic pen.

Geoff Parker is one of “those” Parkers. He is the eldest great-grandchild of founder George S. Parker, and has spent much of his life in or around the business. He is currently working as Brand Historian/Ambassador. The balance of his time is spent researching, writing, and sharing what he knows about PARKER’s 135-year history from his home in NE Florida.

Make a Pocket-Journal/Sketchbook

In this fun, hands-on workshop you’ll fold and customize your own pocket-journal for ink swatching, journaling, urban sketches, collecting pen show ephemera. From one piece of premium paper you’ll fold a pocket-journal, which is both pocket-sized and has pockets inside & out. Then you’ll customize it using page inserts, note cards, rubber stamps and ink swatches. A brief introduction to Urban Sketching will provide you with creative ways to fill your journal, even for beginner sketchers. The size makes it easy to keep on-hand for adding notes, sketches, and bits & pieces of ephemera; a pocket-sized memory keeper. By the end of the weekend your filled pocket-journal will turn into a great souvenir of the Orlando Pen Show.

Fee: $40

Materials will be provided for creating the pocket journal. Basic sketching supplies will be available in the classroom, or bring your own. Recommended: basic watercolor palette, waterbrush, pencil, PEN, colored pencils and/or markers (you do not need a lot of supplies, remember keep it portable).

Judith Butler Dollar is a graphic designer, illustrator and long-time Urban Sketcher. She serves as admin for Urban Sketchers Houston and is very enthusiastic about “all things Urban Sketching”. In the last 10 years she has filled more than 100 sketchbooks with Urban Sketches from her travels & everyday life. Her sketches have been published in regional and international publications. She is never without a sketchbook on-hand.
